DBT-Based Programming for Families with Loved Ones Diagnosed with Comorbid BPD and SUD

This workshop aims to highlight the importance of psychoeducational family programming that is supplemental and separate from integrative family therapy sessions within an individual’s treatment.

Emotion Regulation is a broad term describing one’s ability to effectively regulate their emotions. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) are two mental health diagnoses grounded in one’s difficulty regulating emotions effectively and, in recent studies, have shown increased rates of co-morbidity among adult mental health clients. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DB

Research shows a pervasive impact that both BPD and SUD can have on interpersonal relationships, specifically those with family members or caretakers. This familial strain is often overlooked in the treatment of the individual despite research consistently indicating that environmental changes such as increased psychoeducation and communication behaviors from their support system are related to longer lengths of sobriety and maintenance in effective coping behaviors for the individual and decreased emotional suffering, stigma, and burnout for the family members.

The proposed presentation highlights the importance of a DBT skills-based family support program for the support system of those diagnosed with BPD and SUD as a supplement to their loved one’s individual therapy. An effective family treatment program would help to 1) reduce burnout and stress; 2) increase understanding of the symptomatology, diagnosis, and expected outcomes; 3) increase ability to practice self-care; 4) decrease engagement in reinforcing behaviors; and 5) increase effective communication.
