This presentation will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of co-occurring borderline personality disorder and eating disorders. Specific topics will address presenting the borderline personality disorder diagnosis to client, conceptualizing how borderline personality disorder develops, and how to assist clients in navigating how their borderline personality disorder diagnosis impacts their engagement in their eating disorder and vice versa. The presenter will also provide insight into how to validate clients while holding them accountable to be independent in recovery.
Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.

12:00 PM - 12:15 PM Review of DSM criteria for borderline personality disorder and biosocial theory
12:15 PM - 12:30 PM- Review of suicide statistics, stigma of borderline personality disorder
12:30 PM - 1:00 PM- Discussion of how borderline personality disorder symptoms and eating disorder symptoms overlap (discussion of over-controlled/under-controlled personality types, impulsivity, getting needs met through being “sick”, the therapeutic relationship, etc.)
1:00 PM - 1:15 PM- Therapy modalities, techniques, and strategies to best treat co-occurring borderline personality disorders and eating disorders.
